GSB Prospection Ltd (GSB) has been operating since 1986; we were the first commercial archaeological geophysics group in the UK.

During the past 30 years we have carried out well over 3000 projects throughout the UK and abroad. We have the experience of working in both the ‘commercial world’ and on ‘research’ projects.

We are used to working to tight schedules and meeting deadlines, which are paramount to the success of a project in developer-funded archaeology. In addition, we have worked widely with museums and universities on a variety of collaborative projects, many of international standing. At the same time we have successfully carried out a number of “community projects” with HLF and have been commended for our professionalism and enthusiasm.

GSB has also been associated with Channel 4’s Time Team for over 20 years; Dr John Gater has appeared in well over 200 episodes and is recognised as the public face of archaeological geophysics. As a company, GSB is committed to supporting Public Archaeology.

We have published our results widely, both in academic and local journals and have written professional guidelines for the Institute of Archaeologists. We have also written a popular textbook – “Revealing the Buried Past: Geophysics for Archaeologists” published by the History Press.

Since 1 October 2012 GSB have been part of the SUMO Group of companies. As part of Sumo we have access to additional survey teams, personnel and equipment, and, operating alongside our sister company Stratascan we can offer an unrivalled service in archaeological geophysics.

In 2013/14 GSB developed its first cart system for collecting magnetic data. The accompanying images show the system and the high quality of the results, which can be superimposed upon the local topography.
