Since the launch of Sumo in 2001 the company has become the largest specialist supplier of utility detection and identification service throughout the UK . The business idea grew out of the experience gained by Pipehawk PLC, the manufacturer of The unique Ground Penetrating Radar device which is used by SUMO.
The idea led to the formation of Sumo as a Joint Venture pilot
franchise business in 2001. The initial principal founders
were Pipehawk PLC and Franchise Concepts Ltd both companies
bringing their unique areas of business acumen to the development
of the company.
The success of the initial pilot program led to SUMO gaining
BFA accreditation and the launch of the Franchise program.
Full membership was obtained in 2007.
The first Franchise partner joined in April 2003 and there
are now 21 vehicles, including our own, operating throughout
the UK. Customer demand continues to increase and we are implementing
a significant expansion during 2007 and 2008 including the
introduction of a new
topographic surveying franchisewhich will work
in conjunction with our utility detection franchises.
The general structure of the franchise is based upon the principle that all business support services is provided by SUMO, leaving the franchisee free to develop their business locally and to provide the SUMO service to their clients. We provide a central marketing service (inclusive of a centralised booking service), a comprehensive business administration service (invoicing, the collection of client debts and the maintenance of each franchisee's accounting, VAT, PAYE and corporate records) and a full technical support programme (including both on-going training and an in-field-support team).
