Feasibility Study - Exhibition Road, London

SUMO undertook a month long utility survey in one of the UKs best known addresses " home to the Science, Natural History, and Victoria & Albert Museums and Imperial College. Due to the amount of vehicular and pedestrian traffic the project was undertaken at night.

SUMO was also responsible for full traffic management including the main arterial Cromwell Road, resident liaison, parking bay suspension, and liaison with four separate statutory authorities.

Two full time SUMO Project Managers supported by four field teams surveying at night and two office teams processing survey data throughout the day ensured the whole project was completed within the agreed time scale.

Retail - Tesco Supermarkets - Nationwide

In excess of 25 Tesco sites benefited from a SUMO Utility Detection Survey.

The risk from construction works to any supermarket is considerable when one considers the consequence of disruption to the utility services of a superstore. In one recent case, where a SUMO Survey was not undertaken, a petrol forecourt had to close when the electricity cable was accidently severed by contractors and the cost in lost sales was £60,000 per day.To minimise disruption to both trade and customers during normal trading hours SUMO has undertaken some surveys at night.

MOD Sites

Many MOD facilities have had the benefit of a SUMO Utility Survey.

In addition to routine maintenance schemes and development works, projects have included utility infrastructure upgrades, runway extensions, HV power system diversionary works, communications system tower bases and asset management records.

At an RAF airfield where a SUMO Survey was not undertaken prior to commencement of works, a contractor damaged the main power supply to the control tower " unfortunately the backup generators failed causing closure of the runway! MOD sites that SUMO has worked at include: RAF Linton on Ouse, Conningsby, Menwith Hill, Brize Norton, High Wycombe, ATR Pirbright, RNAS Culdrose & Yeovilleton, SEME Bordon, RMA Sandhurst, and AAC Middle Wallop.

Infrastructure - Highways

SUMO has surveyed hundreds of miles of public carriageway.

From byways to motorways, whether for utility infrastructure works, streetscape planning, urban regeneration schemes, asset management or simply routine maintenance works - knowing the location of the buried services before you start work will save you both time and money.

As is so often the case with live carriageway working, traffic management costs can easily outweigh the works being undertaken within them. SUMO surveys are carefully designed to ensure maximum efficiency of working within the TM arrangements.

Depending upon our customer requirements and TM mandates, SUMO can offer off-peak daytime working, off-peak evening shifts or full night and weekend working to suit. We often find that in urban areas with moderate or high traffic flows, an off-peak evening shift affords maximum efficiency to our surveyors enabling us to pass these savings on to our client.

Education Sites

SUMO surveys numerous educational facilities throughout the UK. A utility survey at an educational facility is usually undertaken during school term time and SUMO understands the requirements of working on educational premises with pupils present.

Attention is given to ensure that all working areas are made especially safe for the protection of staff and pupils. No service cover is ever left unattended when open, even with the appropriate signage and guarding in place. The survey work schedule can accommodate the specific requirement of the school, college or university.

In addition to the many single school projects SUMO undertakes each year, the following is a sample of some of the large multi-school projects that SUMO has recently surveyed: Balfour Beatty Schools for the Future - Tyne & Wear; Kier Sheffield " Sheffield Children's Centres; Costain " Bradford Schools.

Hospital and Healthcare Sites

SUMO undertakes many surveys for Hospital Trusts each year. The complexity of the sites and the 24 hour availabillity requires flexibility in how a survey work schedule is planned and managed.

SUMO's primary objective is to ensure time on site is always kept to the minimum whilst maintaining access for emergency services, patients and medical staff.

Due to the continually changing infrastructures of hospitals SUMO is often asked to provide a complete range of surveying services - Topographic, Utility Mapping, verification of 'as built' records and Measured Building Surveys.

Recent projects have included Birmingham Hospitals Joint Venture, St Marys (Portsmouth), St Bernards (Ealing) and John Radcliffe (Oxford).
